Determining the Needs of Your IT Infrastructure

As the IT needs of organizations continue to evolve, more solutions continue to emerge, offering to assist businesses in the operation of IT services and infrastructure.
While many of these solutions do provide significant value, companies should carefully investigate and choose which solutions make the most sense given their specific IT needs.
Particularly when it comes to IT Infrastructure outsourcing (ITO), there are a number of levels of service to choose from. As the infrastructure needs of 21st Century business grows, companies are turning in droves to data centers to more efficiently manage these needs.
However, before jumping on the bandwagon, be sure to cover the necessary due-diligence needed to make an informed decision. ITO can certainly help your organization save costs and run more efficiently, but only if you choose the right ITO solution for your needs.
When it comes to determining the needs of your organization’s IT infrastructure, there are four basic questions that need to be answered. These four things will give good insight into what type of solution will be the best value for your business.
1. Does IT infrastructure management fit into your organization’s set of core competencies?First things first. Before jumping headlong into any ITO solution, start by determining if it fits within your organization’s core competencies. Just because other organizations are doing it, doesn’t mean it’s a wise investment for your business.
If the answer is yes, move on to question number two. If the answer is no, perhaps a different IT solution would be a better fit to help your company improve efficiency and spending.
2. What areas of IT infrastructure have the most room for improvement?Next, take a careful look at your current IT infrastructure. What are the areas of strength? What areas need the most improvement? Are there any missing capabilities that would help improve your systems?
These are all important questions in assessing the current state of your IT infrastructure. Ask plenty of questions and look for holes or areas of weakness. Clarifying your areas of greatest need will ensure you end up with a solution that makes the most impact.
3. What IT investments would be more cost efficient if managed by a dedicated ITO provider?Answering this question may require an investigation into your current IT spending. Look at exactly where your IT dollars are going and probe for leaks. Consider which areas would benefit the most from outsourced management.
4. Based on the previous questions, what level of ITO service makes the most sense for your organization?Take your answers from questions three and four and line them up. Between areas of weakness and areas of inefficient cost, you should gain a good idea of what your organization requires from an ITO provider.
When researching and speaking with colocation or data center suppliers, focus your questions around these areas of need. By first determining your exact IT infrastructure needs, you can be sure your outsourced investment will be the right decision for the health of your business.

Can be safely ignored,
Most of the books in the official ITIL series are required reading if you are implementing or pursuing ITIL certification. This one can, in my opinion, be safely ignored.
The key theme of the book is promotion of the ITIL and its benefits, and a high-level overview of implementation issues. The areas covered include: describing the ITIL vision, helping you to determine your ‘As Is’ posture and your ‘To Be’ per the ITIL.
It also provides a roadmap to get from ‘As Is’ to ‘To Be’, checkpoints, and advice on how to maintain momentum during the implementation. This guide also gives an example cost-benefit analysis supporting for service management process implementation, a process maturity framework, and a glossary of terms.
A more detailed book that will easily supplant this one is “IT Service Management: An Introduction” (ISBN 9080671347). It contains all of the information that this book provides, plus an in-depth look at each of the ITIL’s key process areas, how they relate to one another, and better implementation advice.
