Introduce Yourself to the Basic Facts of Enterprise Storage

Article by Juan P Carlos

In almost every business an storage system is used at its full strength, in order to manage and monitor data. The main role of the Enterprise storage system is that it helps in protecting data. Sharing of data within different computers can be made possible by connecting it through LAN, MAN or WAN within a network environment such as UNIX, windows 2000 and so on.

The system differs depending on size and its operation. There are four parameters that must be considered with the storage system, which are disaster recovery, storage, backup and archiving. These parameters are dependent on cost and performance. There are several systems, the basic among them are DAS, storage area network (SAN) and network attached storage (NAS).

DAS is considered as the backbone of the Enterprise storage system. SAN and NAS can be easily deployed. DAS is also connected with the storage interface of the host computer. In this a data network is required in such a way that the computers accept the host computer. The storage devices used in DAS are SAS, SATA, SCSI, PATA and many more. The advantage with SAN is that it permits more than one host computer to attach to a sole storage machine. This functionality allows server computers to manage the storage volume in a storage device, but it can’t be used and shared by more than one client. The storage devices in SAN are ISCSI, FC and AoE.

NAS resides above SAN or DAS. For its compatibility it uses SMB and NFS. The difference between NAS, SAN and DAS is that in NAS, multiple clients can use a single volume at the same time, which is not the case with the others. The compatibility of NAS is somewhat lower than that of DAS and SAN.

Enterprise data storage helps an organisation with network security threats, backup plans and disaster recovery setup. They are made for organisations that basically focus on long term goals and requirements. The advantage of the Enterprise storage system is that it is reliable and scalable, with high tolerance. With the Enterprise storage system you can also protect your data offline at a lower cost than that of online storage. Thus, if you own an organisation or business, thinking about an Enterprise storage system is the best option, as it can easily provide you with the security and protection that you actually want in order to free yourself from the bad aspects of business.
