Music Software – Computer Music Resources
When choosing music software from the array of computer music resources available there are two programs that stand out and have become the industry standard.
These are Cubase and cakewalk. I prefer Cubase but this is because I have always used Cubase and before Cubase it was pro24, things have come along way since pro24 I can tell you.
Either of these music software programs will be more than enough for any music recording project, it is important to realise though that the results using this software will only be as good as the soundcard you have installed on your system.
The soundcard is the hub of your recording setup.
You need to check the spec of any soundcard you are thinking of using.
There are a lot to choose from as the computer music resources are ever growing.
You will be looking for a soundcard that has a very low noise to signal ratio and a full band width 20hz-20khz.
A sampling rate of 44.1 or greater and 16 bit or greater.
Also you want to consider how many channels you will need to record at the same time, many will only allow two.
The PC minimum spec should be Pentium 4 1500ghz 512mb ram the harddrive needs to spin at 7200rpm and be at least 80 gig.
A combination of these components will give you a recording system that is capable of producing world class results.
There are is also an array of music software plugins available to provide effects and processing.
Computer music resources are now fairly low cost so you can produce recordings that a few years ago would have cost tens of thousands of pounds.
See my article on recording tips and methods for more detailed information on how to use your medium cost computer to create world class recordings.

Computer Software question by Talan: How do I determine/estimate actual dimensions from an image using computer software?
I need to the know the dimensions of a photo I have saved on my computer. It’s saved as a JPEG File, and I’m using ArcSoft PhotoStudio. There is a person sending in the photo so I can use them as a reference point but I need the steps to set up values in the software so I can click and drag a line and have actual values come up. Can anyone help with this?

Most good graphics programs have x,y co-ordinates which can be given in pixels. A better way is to just crop the person out of the image and go to the Image>Resize menu and see what it says. You can always do a Ctrl + Z to undo anything.

Make sure you can read it.,
Standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept the new SDHC cards. SanDisk differentiates its new cards with the new SDHC logo on the card and retail package.
Now my web research finds that at the time of its release Wes Brewer, vice president of consumer product marketing at SanDisk, said, “In order to provide the easiest and most compatible solution for 4GB and larger capacity SDHC cards in the market, SanDisk chose to bundle its new MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which normally retails for $19.99, with this new card.”
Note this deal does not include a reader.
In my case the device I bought it for can read it. Without the dedicated reader my year old HP computer cannot .

|Beware,
This is a must for loading music to listen to on my Palm TX. But BEWARE of eek Technoligies and buying at this price. They wanted $13.20 for shipping a 2 oz memory card? Buy from someone else even if it is a few dollars more and pay reasonable shipping rates. Don’t be fooled by their cheap price they make it up 2x in shippoing charges. When I saw it I cancelled my order..

|expensive SHIPPING!,
I played around with the prices on this and found out several things. If I order this item, $11 in shipping costs is added by the third party supplier! If I get the 2G version, even two of them, those qualify for free shipping from Amazon and come out much cheaper. So check your prices on these before ordering. My hunch is that you can probably pick this 4G up cheaper at your local electronics/computer store…
